Breast Augmentation Patient Interview Series: Breast Implant Longevity and Quality

Are you concerned about the longevity of your breast implants? Dr Bright from Macquarie Cosmetic Medicine discusses the quality and durability of modern implants.

A concern women may have when it comes to breast augmentation is both quality and the lasting result of their implants. When it comes to breast augmentation, there is a fear of implant failure. However, as Dr Bright discusses in our patient question series, the abilities of modern medicine mean there is little need to worry. “We’ve certainly been very lucky in that over the course of time the quality of the implants has improved so we don’t have implant failure very often,” he said.

The patient expressed her agreeance with Dr Bright when regaling her experience, “yes, we are very lucky, and that was one concern I had especially when I went in for a mammogram you know, is it going to bust?” Thankfully, her worries were ill-founded “No, it didn’t bust, they’re that good of quality that you can squash it down like that and it’s still fine.”

Fears and concerns about breast implant complications include problems such as implant rupture and leakage. However, the chances of these complications occurring are very slim, especially when compared to cosmetic surgery in the past. As Dr Bright explains, “It still happens but nowhere near as frequently as it used to, as the implants are much better quality and safer to use.”

As the patient emphasises, if you do have any questions or concerns about the longevity and quality of your implants, your first consultation is a terrific time to ask as many questions as possible. As she says, “The more questions you ask, the more information you get back, so I stress to anyone that is going to have implants that if you do have any questions write them down before the consult.”

Ultimately, the patient was pleased with her surgery and the durability of the implants.

“That was one thing that I was a little worried about, but there is no worry.”
