It’s important that you take care of yourself after your Tummy Tuck so that you give your body the best chance at healing properly

Plan enough time off

It’s essential that you have enough time to recover from your surgery. And not just time off work, it’s important that you take time away from household chores and grocery shopping, and if you have children, it’s especially important that you have another adult in the house that is able to take care of them. You need time to heal properly, the more time you take to care for yourself early on, the better the healing process will be.

Your diet is paramount

It’s vitally important that you eat a healthy diet filled with fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of protein. You need to eat properly to heal properly. You should try to avoid packaged foods and drinks in general as they are often high in sodium, which will cause your body to swell from water retention. You should also try to reduce your sugar intake as it can suppress your immune system and elongate the healing process.

Flex your feet

You will be spending some time lying down after your surgery, so it’s a good idea to consistently flex and extend your feet and ankles to activate your calf muscles and pump blood around your legs. This will help to reduce the risk of complications like blood clots, and your body will welcome the gentle movements.

Make sure you drink a good amount of water throughout the day. The human body is made up of approximately 70% water and although drinking a lot of water seems like it would make swelling worse, it actually helps to flush out your system and assist with bowel movements. Avoid sports drinks like Gatorade as they are loaded with sodium and will make you swell, and avoid sugary drinks as sugar will suppress your immune system. You want to give your body the best chance at healing.

Relax

You’ve gone through a big procedure, don’t try and snap back to regular activities too soon. The general rule is that it will take at least six weeks to feel like your normal self again. Because a lot of our patients live fit and healthy lifestyles, they are keen to get back to their exercise routines. You should avoid any strenuous activity for quite some time, and stick to gentle walking just to get the blood pumping around your body. Activities you should avoid include:

  • Bending over
  • Reaching above your head
  • Lifting anything heavier than five kilograms
  • Doing sit-ups
  • Jogging

No Smoking

Smoking can severely inhibit your ability to heal properly, and can sometimes result in improper healing and infection. You should try to avoid smoking several weeks before your surgery, and ideally try and stop smoking permanently afterwards.
